Landbou Radio – 24 May 2021

Powdery mildew is the name given to the disease caused by hundreds of species of fungi in the order Erysiphales and causes major problems in tomato and sweet peppers cultivated in tunnels or greenhouses. In the early stages of an infection, the leaves appear as white or gray spots and may quickly enlarge to completely cover the infected plant parts with a nasty blight. In our program of 24 May, Francois van Deventer of Syngenta SA tells us more about Miravis Duo, a product that combats this disease. Robert Berg farms Rooibos tea in the Clanwilliam district. He discusses the benefits of using cover crops. Just to mention a few, It keeps the soil in place, acts as a protective canopy, and reduces soil erosion. Dr Gerhard Verdoorn, Operations and Stewardship Manager at Croplife SA have some information about their crop protection container and management program and the successes regarding the used packaging recycling program. Ernst Mielman of Skade Genade tells us about their new strategies in crop protection and how the producer can reduce its risks. Dr Garry Patterson, Senior Researcher at the ARC Soil Climate and Water discusses the benefits of soil classification
