The 13th Onderstepoort Feedlot Challenge 2021 was proudly presented by the Department of Production Animal Studies, Faculty of Veterinary Science of the University of Pretoria. Fifth year Veterinary students were divided into five groups of 18 to 25 students per group and each group of students had to run the complete process of a commercial feedlot. In our program of 22 June, Dr. Andy Hendzen, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Production Animal Studies and Coordinator of the Feedlot Challenge tells us more about the project and the outcome of the challenge.
Gerhard Greegory, is one of the students that participated in this challenge, Their group was the winners of the challenge. They approached their project from a financial point of view. Financial planning and budgeting to determine the important financial indicators in a feedlot, were one of the objectives of the project.
Niandra Widd, one of the female veterinary students, shares her experience with us. She tells the story of how they selected calves for feedlot, design the feed formulations based on a raw material order list, and mix the rations and manage their own feed store.
Gerrit van Zyl from Hanzyl Bonsmaras, discusses veld management to regenerative agriculture principles such as plant diversity and Implementing cattle correctly. Profitability is key in his farming business and says that stocking rate and fertility in a cow/calf operation are the two most important aspects of profitability.
