Landbou Radio – 28 July 2021

Farm with the livestock breed that you love” Those are the words that you hear when farmers are asked what small stock or cattle breed you need to choose when you decide to start a farming business. There are many aspects to consider. One of those aspects is the adaptability of the animal to your environment. In our program of 28 July, Johan Stadler of Johan Stadler Van Rooys near Kuruman in the Northern Cape Province, tells us about the devastating drought they experienced. The Van Rooy sheep breed proved to withstand those harsh conditions. He also thanks the farmers in our country for providing extra feed during those conditions.

Ampie Coetzee farms with Persian sheep. He discusses the characteristics of this sheepbreed. Persians are known for their supreme fat which is used for making boerewors and sausages.

Johan Gous of Gous Farming near Postmasburg also farms with Van Rooy sheep. Johan’s father started tot farm with the Van Rooy sheep breed many years ago and today this stud is one of the oldest in the country.

Ilse Lombard of the Ilse Lombard Boergoat Stud near Vrede, tells us about the Doornpoort Genetics Group and the advantages of being part of this group. They support each other with good information and are involved in training of newcomers to the Boergoat family.

Dr Johnny van der Merwe, Director of AMT, updates us on the latest livestock, grain and fresh produce prices.
