Landbou Radio – 11 August 2021

South Africa has a thriving Boer goat industry and the quest for good genetics is soaring. The Boer goat is a hardy breed with a great capacity for adaptation and has an exceptional ability to withstand and resist diseases.

In our program of 11 August, Stephanus Malan of the Paardefontein Boer goat stud near Adelaide in the Eastern Cape tells us more about his farming business. This stud is one of the oldest Boer goat studs in the country. His father started farming with these goats in the nineteen-fifties. Stephanus is also a member of the Doornpoort Genetics Group.

Francois Theron of the Top B Dorperstud is the Livestock Manager at Karsten Boerdery in the Northern Cape. The name Top B stands for Top Balance and their aim is to breed animals that are functional and hardy in any circumstances. During the ongoing drought, these sheep performed well. Some of the best genetics will soon be available at their auction.

Dr. Lorinda Frylinck of the ARC Animal Sciences has some information on the effect of pre-slaughter conditions on the meat quality of Indigenous Veld goats.

Dr. Johnny van der Merwe, Director of AMT and Economist, has some information on the latest agricultural trends and prices in the grain and livestock markets.
