Landbou Radio – 31 August 2021

You are never too young to live your dream. Rael du Plessis (14), is the owner of Fabel-R Santa Gertrudis and Appaloosa stud on the farm Belview Estates near Nigel. The love for farming is inherit from her father who is a stud farmer for more than 40 years. In our program of 31 August, Rael tells us about her farming business and why she chose to farm with the Santa Gertrudis cattle breed. She is also an experience horse rider competing in disciplines such as dressage and show jumping.

Hendrik Strydom, Owner of the Amadeus Dexter Stud, talks about the improvement of his Dexter cattle using Imported Dexter cattle semen. He also discusses the role of older cows in his herd.

Kobus Bester, Breed Director of the Simbra Cattle Breeders Association of SA, tells us more about the selection of a registered bull. The improvement of the next generation calf crop is dependent upon the breeding decisions you make. So bottom line profitability is selecting genetically superior sires. Choose well.

Dr. Danie Odendaal, Director of Veeartsnetwerk, has information on herd health management. The framework of herd health control is risk monitoring and assessment in conjunction with best farming practices and the implementation of such a program must be economically feasible and practical.
