National Rooibos tea Day is annually celebrated on 16 January. High quality Rooibos tea is produced only in South Africa and is recognized in the EU as a protected designation of origin. The name Rooibos may only be used to sell and market Rooibos produced and processed in South Africa. There are more than 200 species of Rooibos that grow in the Cederberg region. In our program of 17 January, Adele Brand of Cape Natural Tea Products in Vanrhynsdorp tells us more about the production of Rooibos.
Wernit Dirks is a young farmer in the Western Cape Province. He farms with Rooibos tea, wheat and sheep. Wernit explains that Rooibos has a lifecycle of seven years and is ready to harvest after 18 months after been planted.
Robbie Eksteen, Crop Manager at Saamstaan Boerdery near Malmesbury talks about the making of soybean silage and the advantages of silage on a dairy farm. He explains the process of making silage and the importance of good preservation.
Schalk Kotze is the Eastern Cape Project Manager at Rijk Zwaan. There are a few projects in South Africa where Rijk Zwaan are involved in, mostly technical information and support. Schools benefit from these projects as well as the local communities.
