For agriculture to prevail, the correct economic principles must be implemented, writes Bennie van Zyl

We live in a time in South Africa’s history where diverse ideologies and policy environments have been merged into one government of national unity. The question arises: How can we find a common ground that will act in the best interests of the country’s residents?

We face significant challenges with policy differences such as those between the ANC, advocating for expropriation without compensation, and the DA, staunchly defending property rights as the foundation of prosperity. Therefore, it is crucial that the correct economic principles are implemented.

For 30 years, South Africa has lived under the ideological onslaught of a government that seems to believe that wealth can simply be redistributed or handed to cadres. They do not necessarily grasp the principle of economic growth, as evidenced by their policy environment. This approach has led to a transformation policy that includes black economic empowerment and cadre deployment. The result has been failing infrastructure and poor service delivery by state institutions, due to a lack of necessary skills and accountability.

This is a harsh reality we face. Amid uncertainty about future policies, the question remains whether we will continue on a socialist path or implement more rational, economically driven principles. Only time will tell.

Despite pressure on the agricultural sector, the industry performed well in the first quarter, as seen in production figures. Agriculture has once again ensured that South Africa does not experience an economic downturn. Agriculture consistently remains the stabiliser that puts food on the table and prevents the country from descending into anarchy.

The role of agriculture is of utmost importance. TLU SA cannot emphasise enough how proud we are of our farmers. We now wait to see how the new policy environment will specifically support the agricultural sector. Will the new Minister of Police take responsibility, cleanse the police force of undesirable elements, and ensure that SAPS members are well-equipped and trained? Will the public regain confidence in the police? Or will we continue on the path of distrust that fuels crime?

The government must realise that it needs to create an environment where parties are eager to invest. Successful businesses and farms contribute to economic growth, which in turn generates tax revenue. However, it seems the state takes this for granted without establishing the necessary policy environment for the private sector to function effectively.

The policy environment that will take shape after the establishment of the new government is crucial for future success. The outcome of a policy environment is an important factor that cannot be ignored.

Here, in the agricultural environment, it is essential to remain positive and exert necessary pressure on the government so that we can overcome irrationalities. We must ensure that the role agriculture has played so far as a stabiliser in the economy continues. May agriculture thrive and receive an economically driven policy so that we can overcome ideological obstacles.
