Landbou Radio – 11 May 2021

It is necessary to monitor the genetic diversity of breeds to guarantee the survival of the breed in the long run. A study was undertaken to study genetic diversity parameters for the SA Tuli cattle population. In our program of 11 May, Dr. Helena Theron, Senior Geneticist at SA Stud Book, discusses this study and the factors that were used as key parameters in monotony genetic diversity in cattle breeds. Yusuf Ravat of the Jari Hugenoot Stud has recently rewarded the RDB Consulting/SA Stud Book Unique Achiever of the Year award. Yusuf is a sixth-generation farmer in this family business and he tells us more about his business and plans for the future. Willie van den Berg, Auctioneer at André Kock & Seun, tells us more about the new biodiversity rules for livestock agents and how they comply with these new regulations. He also has some information regarding the Lorisa Brahman Stud Auction that will be held soon. Freddie van Zyl, of the Bracklyn Dairy farm in the Eastern Cape, talks about his pasture-based dairy farm, its feeding systems, and grazing strategies.
