Landbou Radio – 25 May 2021

“To measure is to know” Those are the famous words of Prof Jan Bonsma who are known as the developer of the Bonsmara Cattle Breed in South Africa. Accurate data on livestock production and productivity are essential. In our program of 25 May, Pieter Meyer of Lovedale Farming talks about the benefits of accurate measuring, the difference between genotype and phenotype, and how phenotype, the observable characteristics, are influenced by the environment. Michiel van Niekerk, Nguni Studbreeder of Ganna Nguni Farming near Kimberley, discusses the traits of economic importance and says that these traits should be measured objectively. He also talks about crossbreeding and its benefits. Marius Potgieter of the Marichell Simbra Stud talks about the use of good genetics in your stud. Making hasty decisions can be disastrous and will leave a huge dent in your pocket. Take your time, do your homework, plan and you will succeed.
